Case Worker/Counsellor (Male)

Background

PRADET (Psychosocial Recovery and Development in East Timor) was established as a national NGO since 2002. Our mission is to provide comprehensive psychosocial services for individuals experiencing trauma, mental illness, domestic and gender-based violence, human trafficking, and other complex psychosocial challenges.

PRADET is currently seeking a qualified and compassionate Male Counsellor to deliver vital psychological and counseling support. The successful candidate will work closely with individuals facing stress, trauma, abandonment, family conflict, and other challenging social conditions.

The primary goal of this role is to guide clients toward recovery, empower them to rebuild self-confidence, restore family harmony, and inspire them to contribute positively to their families and communities.

Main Responsibilities

  • Provide Counseling and Psychosocial Support: Conduct individual and group counseling sessions for male clients experiencing trauma, stress, family conflict, or mental health challenges using evidence-based practices
  • Case Management: Conduct initial intakes, risk assessments, and develop personalized care plans. Monitor client progress and ensure timely follow-ups
  • Crisis Intervention: Offer immediate psychological first aid and crisis management support for clients in acute distress or emergency situations
  • Referral and Coordination: Identify external medical, legal, or social services required by clients and facilitate safe, confidential referrals
  • Community Engagement: Assist in outreach activities to raise awareness about mental health, gender-based violence, and psychosocial well-being within the family and community
  • Reporting and Documentation: Maintain accurate, highly confidential, and up-to-date client files. Prepare regular progress reports for the Program Manager
  • Field Travel: Travel to municipalities outside Dili to provide support, conduct assessments, or attend community coordination meetings as required

Required Qualifications & Experience

  • Education: A university degree or recognized professional diploma in Psychology, Social Work, Public Health, General Medicine, or a closely related social science field
  • Experience: Minimum of 2–3 years of professional experience in counseling, psychosocial support, or social case management (experience working with NGOs is highly preferred)
  • Have advanced skills in operating computers (MS Word, MS Excel, PowerPoint, and others)
  • Know how to use e-mail to facilitate communication lines
  • Have good communication skills in English and Portuguese is a good advantage
  • Criminal check record document

Core Skills

  • Strong active listening, empathy, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Proven ability to handle sensitive cases with strict confidentiality and a non-judgmental attitude
  • Basic crisis intervention and problem-solving abilities
  • Languages: Fluency in Tetum (spoken and written) is required. Working knowledge of English or Portuguese is a strong asset
  • Other Requirements: Ability to travel frequently to municipalities and work effectively in diverse, resource-limited community settings
