The Project

The Fleming Fund Country Grant for Timor-Leste focuses on strengthening antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and antimicrobial use (AMU) surveillance systems and antimicrobial consumption (AMC) data capture in both human and animal health sectors. The project aims to facilitate a stronger One Health approach to surveillance.

Position Summary

The Veterinary Technician will work closely with the National Directorate of Veterinary (NDV) and other collaborators to improve data collection for AMR and AMU. The role involves implementing the surveillance program for AMR and AMU, with support from the Menzies' Animal Health Lead and Animal Health Epidemiology Officer. The position is based in Dili, Timor-Leste, with regular travel to other municipalities.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Coordinate and train NDV and municipal animal health service staff on field sampling protocols for AMR surveillance
  • Coordinate field sample collection with stakeholders
  • Prepare and pack sampling equipment and reagents
  • Coordinate with the Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory (VDL) on sample collection and results
  • Engage with veterinary technicians and farmers to promote sample submission
  • Assist with data entry and analysis from AMR and AMU surveillance programs
  • Assist with interviews and engagement sessions on antimicrobial use in animals

Selection Criteria

  • Tertiary qualification relevant to the Primary Responsibilities
  • Experience in animal health, public health, or livestock development
  • Fluent in Tetum with moderate English skills
  • Strong communication and partnership-building skills
  • Self-motivated with good judgment and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to obtain a National Police Clearance certificate
