Background

Australia Awards Timor-Leste (AATL) is a project funded by Australian Government though the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT). Australia Awards Scholarships (AAS) have been offered to Timorese to undertake tertiary study in Australia since 2000.

The awards support long-term education in Australia at diploma level (for people with disability and people living in municipalities outside of Dili), Bachelor, Master's, and PhD levels, targeting priority human resource and development needs in Timor-Leste as aligned with the priorities of the Australian development program.

Through study and research, recipients develop the skills and knowledge to drive change and help build enduring people-to-people links with Australia.

AATL is managed by Palladium International on behalf of the Australian Government.

Description of Internship

AATL is seeking two highly motivated interns who wish to develop their professional skills and experience and support the implementation of Australia Awards Scholarship activities and Timor-Leste Australia Alumni Association (TL3A) activities.

Australia Awards Timor-Leste carries out annual promotion, selection and mobilisation for the Australia Awards Scholarships program. AATL Scholarship and Alumni Support (SAS) Interns will be provided with training and coaching to be able to provide administrative support to the promotion, selection and mobilisation process.

Additionally, the TL3A supports a range of small grants, sectoral activities, showcase and other celebratory alumni events. The SAS interns will receive training and guidance to be able to provide administrative and logistical support to these activities.

Key Responsibilities

Australia Awards:

  • Providing administrative support during scholarship promotion, selection and mobilisation process
  • Providing mentoring and support to people with disabilities during course selection, online application, and further selection process
  • Providing mentoring and guidance to potential scholarship candidates during the selection and mobilisation process including English preparation, testing and interview
  • Providing administrative support to in-country and in-Australia English short courses
  • Providing operations and admin support for other SAS program activities and events as required

Alumni/TL3A:

  • Supporting TL3A administrative processes for alumni events, sectoral group activities, small grants, alumni showcase events, and alumni reintegration activities
  • Supporting TL3A in preparation and implementation of alumni celebratory events such as the Welcome Home Dinner Reception and Alumni of the Year event
  • Providing support for AATL's mentoring program planning and implementation

Supervision and Reporting

AATL interns will be supervised by the Scholarship Coordinator and TL3A Alumni Secretariat Coordinator. Reporting requirements include:

  • Monitoring and preparing mini monthly reports on Scholarship & TL3A activities
  • Managing relevant provision of information and records, and ensure safekeeping of documents
  • Other reporting and tasks as requested by the SAS or TL3A Coordinators

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field, e.g. logistics, management and administration, community development, etc. Qualifications from local universities in Timor-Leste preferred
  • Minimum of 1-year work experience which can include professional experience, volunteering, support for youth activities, etc.
  • Good skills using Microsoft Office applications, e.g. MS Word, Excel
  • A proactive and creative working style, with the ability to work independently and within a team
  • Have basic time management skills and ability to manage multiple tasks, with strong attention to detail
  • Able to demonstrate 'can-do' attitude
  • Good English language skills, able to speak and write confidently
  • Willing to travel to municipalities outside of Dili and working on the weekend/after working hours if required

Please note: Internships are not available to applicants who have (or intend to) apply for an Australia Awards Scholarship in 2027 (for the 2028 Intake).

Contract Details

  • Duration: 6 months
  • Contract period: July-December 2026
  • Stipend: A monthly stipend will be provided
