Feeding Trial Manager (Livestock Feeding Trial)

Project Background

The Feeding Trial Manager will support the implementation of a cattle feeding trial under the ACIAR-funded project SLAM/2020/141 – Increasing On-farm Labour Productivity for Sustainable Production, Nutrition and Inclusive Livelihood Gains in Timor-Leste.

The feeding trial is a collaborative activity involving TOSKA, Charles Darwin University (Australia), MALFF, and other project partners. The study aims to evaluate improved feeding strategies for cattle production and contribute to increased livestock productivity and farmer livelihoods in Timor-Leste.

The position will be supervised by TOSKA's National Team Leader and National Research Coordinator. Researchers from Charles Darwin University have designed the study, while the Feeding Trial Manager will be responsible for managing daily trial operations and supporting data collection activities.

Main Responsibilities

  • Organise the set-up of a cattle feeding experiment at Dotik livestock Centre, including testing and installation of cattle scales, assist with planning of logistics
  • Do daily feeding and weighing of feed for feed intake calculations
  • Do daily welfare checks on cattle (e.g. for lameness, sickness, checking there is enough water) and report to the project leader
  • Assist scientists to handle cattle for data collection (e.g. helping get cattle on and off scales)
  • Liaise with Dotik Research Centre staff and ACIAR project staff

Desirable Skills and Experience

  • Cattle handling skills
  • Experience of collecting and transcribing data and making measurements for a research trial or experiment
  • Strong spoken Tetun and English

Preferred Candidate

Preference will be given to candidates from Manufahi Municipality or nearby areas due to the field-based nature of the livestock activities and the need for regular presence at Dotik livestock Centre.
